In case of de-blockage of communications in the region, Armenian greenhouse economies will become uncompetitive compared with Turkish and Azerbaijani producers. This is what Executive Director of Greenhouse Association NGO Poghos Gevorgyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am, adding that this is due to the fact that greenhouse economies in Turkey operate in regions where the weather is hot.

As far as Azerbaijan is concerned, the prices of energy resources are lower than the prices in Armenia. “Thus, if communications are de-blocked in the region, Armenian greenhouse economies will simply go bankrupt and be closed. For comparison, let us mention that a kilogram of Turkish tomatoes is AMD 300, taking into consideration production, transfer and customs duties, while the original price of tomatoes produced in Armenia is AMD 500,” Gevorgyan added.

The analyst stated the use of solar energy as a way out of the situation, but, according to him, this requires serious investments. “Our organization addressed the government with such a proposal. It is possible to turn Armenia into a country for greenhouse industry through the use of our seedlings, constructions and energy [solar]. Our organization has also offered to create special conditions for greenhouse economies in Armenia’s mountainous region and the export of eco-friendly and competitive products, taking into consideration the fact that such products are in high demand in Europe,” he said, adding that it is also necessary to solve the problem with security guarantees for investments since those regions have become borderline regions.

According to the statement signed by President of Russia Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan and President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on November 9, 2020, it is planned to de-block all economic and transport communications in the region.
