Russia has consistently opposed trade blockades and restrictions in the South Caucasus. This was stated in an interview with Russia Today by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko, when asked whether Russia needs transit via Georgia any longer, given that now there is a prospect for a transport route from Russia via Azerbaijan and Armenia.

According to him, the de-blockage economic and transport ties is in the strategic interests of all countries in the region. "This aspiration was specified in the statements of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia, as a result of the meetings on November 9, 2020, as well as on January 11 this year. Based on that, we have already started respective work with Baku and Yerevan. At the same time, we do not miss a broader context, given the aspiration of our partners to contribute to ensuring the prosperity and stability of the South Caucasus," Rudenko added.
