UK lawyer and diplomat Karim Khan, 50, has been elected the new chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, BBC reported.

Karim Khan currently heads a UN investigation into war crimes committed by the ISIS group in Iraq.

As Chief Prosecutor of the ICC, Karim Khan will replace Fatou Bensouda from The Gambia.

US former president Donald Trump adopted a decree that allowed the imposition of sanctions on Khan's predecessor and other members of the ICC due to the investigation of possible war crimes committed by American citizens in Afghanistan in 2003-2014. The United States, Israel, China and Russia do not accept the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.
