Former Argentine President Carlos Menem died on Sunday, his daughter, Zulema Menem, has confirmed. He was 90 years old, CNN reported.
Menem took office in July 1989 and left office in 1999 after unsuccessfully trying to modify the constitution to run for a third term.
He ran again for the presidency in 2003, obtaining the highest percentage of votes during the first round of elections, but ultimately decided against advancing to the second round.
He remained active in politics.
Argentina's current President Alberto Fernandez decreed three days of national mourning starting Sunday in honor of Menem.
Carlos Menem was hospitalized in December last year with an infection and was under medical supervision since then, TASS reports.
