Japan and the United States have agreed to extend the terms for the distribution of costs for maintaining American bases in the country until March 31, 2022.

According to the Japanese MFA statement, the governments of Japan and the United States have agreed to extend the current cost-sharing terms for one fiscal year. The parties also agreed to continue negotiations on the distribution of costs for the next period.

As Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi told a briefing, the costs incurred by the Japanese side in the 2021 financial year will amount to 201.7 billion yen - nearly $ 1.9 billion.
