Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI) has signed a joint venture agreement with US Lockheed Martin to enhance the kingdom's defenses, MEM reported.

SAMI said it will own 51 percent of the enterprise, adding that it aims to develop localized capabilities through the transfer of technology and knowledge, and by training Saudi workers to manufacture products for armed forces of Saudi Arabia and the provision of services to them.

While Saudi Arabia continues to be a major global arms importer, some Western countries have suspended arms sales to Riyadh in recent years due to its involvement in the Yemeni war.

Lockheed Martin Vice President Timothy Cahill said the deal was an important milestone for the American company.

This agreement is in line with Lockheed Martin's strategy to expand its partnership with the kingdom by providing robust security and protection solutions, he said.
