The German government decided to extend the Bundeswehr's mission in Afghanistan until January 31, 2022.

The current mandate for the presence of the German military in Afghanistan as part of NATO's Resolute Support Mission expires in March. The number of Bundeswehr soldiers in Afghanistan should not exceed 1,300. The decision to extend the mission has yet to be approved by the Bundestag, DW reports.

Bundeswehr soldiers were sent to Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.
