India has imposed tough new rules on social media platforms, accusing US tech giants of double standards, AFP reported.

The regulations will take effect three months later and will force social media, online streaming services, and digital news services, including Facebook and Twitter, to remove content within 24 hours of filing a complaint.

Tech companies will also have to disclose the origins of the malicious tweets or messages if requested by the Indian court or government.

Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad justified the move by comparing Twitter's refusal to remove content after protesting farmers rioted New Delhi in January to his actions following an attempted storming of the US Capitol.
