Armenian army's statement was the smallest and softest manifestation of resistance, Chairman of the Chamber of Advocates of Armenia Ara Zohrabyan said during a live broadcast on his Facebook.
The General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces demands the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and his government.
The army has also expressed its resolute protest over the dismissal of the First Deputy Chief of the Armenian Armed Forces General Staff.
At the suggestion of the PM, President Armen Sarkissian had dismissed Tiran Khachatryan, who had reportedly mocked PM's words about the alleged flaw of the Russia-made Iskander missile systems.
Following the incident, the Armenian army noted that the PM and the government are no longer able to make proper decisions for the Armenian people.
The army also noted their statement is not made under anyone's pressure.
According to Zohrabyan, "what should the Armed Forces have done if, for example, they would have learned that high-ranking officials of Armenia, by their behavior, pose a military threat to the Republic? It is well known that Article 14 of the Constitution of Armenia imposes on the Armed Forces the duty to protect the borders and security of Armenia, and according to Article 15 of the Law on Defense, the Armed Forces are entrusted with the task of identifying military threats and countering them.
In these conditions, the statement of the direct leadership of the Armed Forces was the most minimal and gentle manifestation of resistance. Whereas, depending on the scale of the threats, actions could be more severe. The armed forces must show political neutrality, but in the current situation, I consider resistance in this form acceptable and legitimate. Therefore, I express my support to the direct leadership of the Armed Forces," he said.
