YEREVAN. – A meeting of the Council of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia is scheduled for 11am Friday, during which the initiative to convene a special session of the NA—and on the initiative of the opposition Bright Armenia and Prosperous Armenia factions—is to be discussed.

The matters of lifting the current martial law and the internal political situation in the country are on the agenda of the special session.

The aforesaid meeting of the NA Council was supposed to take place Thursday, but the MPs of the majority My Step did not show up and the meeting did not take place. It is not ruled out that they will not show up Friday either.

On Thursday morning, the General Staff of the Armed Forces issued a statement in which the high-ranking military officials demanded the resignation of PM Nikol Pashinyan and his government. Pashinyan, however, considered the move as an "attempt at a military coup" and called on his supporters to gather at Republic Square in downtown Yerevan.

After their rally at Liberty Square in downtown Yerevan, the opposition demanding Pashinyan’s resignation marched to Marshal Baghramyan Avenue, continued their respective protest in front of the National Assembly, after which they announced that they would pitch tents and spend the night on Marshal Baghramyan Avenue.
