The new EU and US sanctions on Russia significantly harm the already deplorable relations, Russian president's spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters, RIA Novosti said.

According to him, sanctions are nothing more than interference in the internal affairs of Russia.

When asked to explain why the United States and the European Union are imposing targeted sanctions not on the Russian state debt or big business, the presidential press secretary noted that it is not the Kremlin's concern to explain some motivation.

Russia considers any such restrictions absolutely unacceptable, because they significantly harm the already deplorable relations, in this case - relations with the United States of America and relations with the European Union, he added.

The European Union on Tuesday imposed sanctions for the first time under the new global regime for human rights violations against four Russian citizens in connection with the detention of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.

The United States did the same, including 14 organizations in the sanctions list.
