I hope that after the President of Armenia applied to the Constitutional Court, the latter will adopt a decision that will help prevent the irreversible consequences and stop the implementation of illegal actions. This is what political scientist Tevan Poghosyan told reporters today.

Poghosyan also voiced hope that Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia Onik Gasparyan will continue his service and that if illegal actions have been committed in the past, the people affected by them will restore their rights and reputation.

According to Poghosyan, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had no right to dismiss the chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces until he attained the age of 65, meaning the whole process is unconstitutional. The analyst stated that Pashinyan thinks he doesn’t bear responsibility for this process, but the legislation states the opposite. “I’m glad that an application on the whole legislation has been submitted to the Constitutional Court since this will provide the opportunity to make a decision at the institutional level.”

On February 25, the General Staff of the Armed Forces issued a statement demanding the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and the Cabinet. Pashinyan immediately recommended dismissing Chief of the General Staff Onik Gasparyan, but the President of Armenia rejected the recommendation and returned the decree with objections. The same day, Pashinyan submitted the draft of the decree again with the demand for dismissal. On March 10, the President applied to the Constitutional Court, but also issued a statement asking to determine the constitutionality of the Law on Military Service and Status of Servicemen of November 15, 2017. However, the President failed to challenge the draft decree on dismissing Gasparyan. As a result, the situation has become even more mixed up.
