First President of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan has made the following statement published on iLur.am:

“Appreciating once again the restraint of the army amid the pressure of the opposition to entangle the army in political processes, I also welcome the decision of the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia to dispute the issue of his resignation by law.

I would also like to emphasize that the main and sole reason for the current situation that is about to explode is the fact that the person who fully failed in his mission to govern the country and led our people to humiliating defeat is morbidly clung to his seat, and this will lead to more and much more painful dangers for us Armenians.

Nevertheless, I have stated several times and am compelled to repeat that the issue of change of power must only be solved constitutionally, the precondition for which is immediate mutual concession between the authorities and the opposition. I believe there is still an opportunity because, contrary to its coarse rhetoric, the opposition hasn’t crossed red lines yet. In case of deviation from the constitutional way, Armenia will never have the chance to become a normal and dignified state.

Thus, the resolution of the current situation is not only and not so much a matter of the moment as a matter of perspective.”
