The adopted act has been discredited so much that it’s not even important for Interpol. This is what advocate Aram Vardevanyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am today.
Today independent MP Taguhi Tovmasyan made public a document according to which Interpol considered the search for former Prosecutor General of Armenia Gevorg Kostanyan (Kostanyan is part of the case of the events of March 1, 2008) to be political and has rejected the Armenian authorities’ request to issue a red notice for Kostanyan.
“Interpol even responds directly by stating that this is politicized persecution that itself rules out execution of any act by Interpol. In this case, Armenia’s law-enforcement system has become a tool for political persecutions. My fellow advocates and I have been talking about this since 2018. We would say that such judicial acts and political orders are completely unlawful. Interpol actually declared that the Armenian authorities are carrying out political persecution that can’t lead to legal consequences,” Vardevanyan mentioned, adding that this decision of Interpol is an embarrassment for the law-enforcement system of Armenia.
“When my fellow attorneys and I were saying this in regard to the case of second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan, many had the impression that this is our tactics for defense. Take a look at the reality. The reality is that even Interpol is responding and recording the embarrassing situation of the law-enforcement system in Armenia,” he said, adding that there has never been such a case in the investigation of any criminal case launched in Armenia.
According to Member of Parliament Taguhi Tovmasyan, Interpol rejected the Armenian authorities’ request to issue a red notice for ex-official Gevorg Kostanyan. Citing documents which she said were the paperwork sent by the Interpol General Secretariat to the Interpol National Bureau in Armenia, Tovmasyan claimed that the motion of the Armenian authorities was turned down because it contradicted Article 3 of the Interpol Constitution, which states: “It is strictly forbidden for the Organization to undertake any intervention or activities of a political, military, religious or racial character.”
