President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian today had a meeting with Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan.
The parties discussed the course of implementation of activities for the return of captives and detection of missing persons.
During the meeting, the Ombudsman introduced his concept paper on the creation of a demilitarized buffer zone to guarantee protection of the rights of Armenians living in Syunik Province. Tatoyan stressed that the borders are being demarcated and delimited with Azerbaijan’s threats of war and the Azerbaijani government’s policy of Armenophobia. In addition, Azerbaijani servicemen fire gunshots next to the villages of Syunik Province which poses a serious risk for the villagers. From the perspective of the rights of residents, the presence of Azerbaijani soldiers, signs and flags on the roads in-between communities of the province have sparked concerns, and there are also gross violations of ownership right.
President Sarkissian emphasized that the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia isn’t officially demarcated and delimited yet, meaning the process of determining the state boundaries is still uncertain from the legal perspective.
