The European Union should negotiate closer trade ties with Turkey, while having a ready-made package of economic sanctions that could be used if Ankara's actions run counter to Brussels' interests. This is said in a report at its disposal, prepared for the EU summit, Reuters reported.

According to the agency, the document, dated March 20, notes that in 2020 Turkey ignored almost all EU foreign policy decisions. It is also noted that the country should be more actively involved in migration issues. Meanwhile, the report noted that Turkey remains an important partner of the European Union and should have a closer customs agreement with the EU.

The report calls on Brussels to prepare a draft economic sanctions against Turkish individuals, which are planned to be used as a lever of pressure on Ankara.
