Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) expressed its opinion as an independent state, and I consider the decision to grant an official status to the Russian language logical. This is what Secretary of the opposition Prosperous Armenia faction of the National Assembly of Armenia Arman Abovyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“In this case, I believe this decision can be viewed as acceptable and expedient for Artsakh and the people of Artsakh. To avoid speculations, I would like to emphasized that the Russian language is granted an official status, meaning Armenian is the only state language in Artsakh,” he added.

Leader of the For Social Justice Party, political scientist Arman Ghukasyan recalled that Russian is not a foreign language for the people of Artsakh since the people have always spoke in Russian. He added that the importance of this decision is linked to the new political realities and the creation of bigger opportunities for communication between the locals and the representatives of the Russian peacekeeping contingent.

“Turkey and Azerbaijan will clearly dislike this, and they might sharply counter this decision in the near future,” he said.

During a conversation with Armenian News-NEWS.am today, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Youth and Sport of the Parliament of Artsakh Aram Harutyunyan said the Russian language has been granted an official status in Artsakh. He also stressed that Russian will be the second official language and that Armenian remains the only state language.
