Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif and President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev discussed issues related to the railway routes connecting Iran, Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The top Iranian official met with Aliyev during his visit to Baku today. According to Tasnim, in addition to the railway routes, the parties also discussed the regional initiative for six-party cooperation, transit corridors and other issues.

The interlocutors also discussed Iran’s participation in demining activities and the restoration of the territories that are now under the control of Azerbaijan following the war that Azerbaijan unleashed against Artsakh in the fall of 2020, as well as the conduct of the ceasefire regime between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

“Now you can play a historical role in establishing peace in the region, and we would like to thank you for expressing the desire for peaceful co-existence with Armenia,” Zarif said to Aliyev and considered the establishment of peace and stability in the region important. “Iran is ready to play a role in achieving this major goal and in restoring the liberated territories,” he added, Mehr reports.

After the visit to Baku, Zarif will visit Yerevan and meet with Armenia’s officials.
