Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan today received Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Argentina to Armenia Mariano Vergara.

As reported the National Assembly of Armenia, the parliamentary speaker greeted the guest, congratulated him on assuming his diplomatic mission in Armenia and wished him success.

According to Mirzoyan, in spite of the long distance between Armenia and Argentina, the two countries’ relations are friendly and there is constructive political dialogue. “Mr. Ambassador, you are in Armenia in an extremely difficult period for the country. You are aware that last fall Azerbaijan unleashed a war against the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh with Turkey’s support and through the involvement of mercenaries and committed war crimes, targeted peaceful civilians and infrastructures and used banned weapons. Although a ceasefire regime was established, Azerbaijan continues to violate the norms of international humanitarian law, isn’t releasing Armenian prisoners of war and is launching phony criminal cases against them. Armenia anticipates immediate response and interference from its international partners,” Mirzoyan said, adding that Azerbaijan continues its Armenophobic policy and aggressive anti-Armenian statements and action which go to show that the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh can never live safely within that country.

Mirzoyan also touched upon Azerbaijani soldiers’ incursion into the sovereign territory of Armenia and the statements that several countries have made in regard to this, according to which the territorial integrity of the Republic of Armenia can’t be jeopardized and that the Azerbaijani troops must leave immediately.

Expressing gratitude for the reception, Mariano Vergara stated that Armenia is an important country for Argentina and reaffirmed his country’s position according to which all conflicts need to be resolved only diplomatically, with respect for the norms of international humanitarian law.

At the end of the meeting, the Ambassador transmitted the messages of the President and Foreign Minister of Argentina on the occasion of the 106th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
