Flash floods and landslides caused by torrential rains in Sri Lanka claimed the lives of at least six people, another 5 people are reported missing, more than 5,000 people lost their homes, SHS reported.

According to the publication, since Thursday evening, the rains have not stopped in six areas of this island state in the Indian Ocean. Many houses, rice fields, and roads are flooded, blocking traffic.

Five people went missing as a result of floods and mudflows. An earthen mound collapsed on the house and buried four members of the same family - parents and two children - in about 85 kilometers east of the capital Colombo.

Local TV station Hiru showed soldiers and villagers cleaning up dirt and debris in an attempt to rescue victims.

More than 5,000 people moved to temporary shelters and more than 600 homes were damaged, according to government figures.
