Mexico is holding parliamentary and local government elections, DW reports.

On Sunday, the country's citizens will elect 500 members of the Chamber of Deputies from 15 of the 32 states, as well as members of regional parliaments and local government.

About 95 million citizens are eligible to vote.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has called on the country's citizens to actively vote, stressing that the government guarantees their safety.

The general election is considered a test of the voters' mood and a check on the incumbent president who is in office since 2018. His governing coalition seeks to retain its two-thirds majority in the lower house of the Mexican parliament.
