The UN Security Council has endorsed Antonio Guterres, who is running for Secretary-General for the second time, and has recommended that the General Assembly appoint him for another five years starting from January 1, 2022.

Guterres succeeded Ban Ki-moon in January 2017, a few weeks before Trump took over the presidency. The first part of his term of office was aimed at “calming down” Trump, who was questioning the value and multilateralism of the UN, AP reports.

The US is the largest financial donor of the UN, ensuring 22% of the regular budget and nearly a quarter of the budget for peacekeeping operations. US President Joe Biden has already started cutting funding again.
