Our view is that there can be no unblocking of territories without its legal-contractual basis, its real assessment in terms of security, economy, demographics. Seyran Ohanyan, the head of the opposition "Armenia" Faction in the National Assembly (NA) and former defense minister of Armenia, said this at Monday’s press briefing in the NA.

According to him, the reopening of regional roads is premature when there is no peace treaty with the adversary, when the latter forces to go to it, whereas the Armenian side begs for peace instead of forming a security system.

"This unblocking will lead to a deeper blockade, and there will be economic pressure, and the demographic picture will change, especially in the Syunik [Province] sector," the opposition MP added.

He stressed that there must be a full-fledged peace, but for that, the adversary—that is, Azerbaijan, and the Turkish-Azerbaijani tandem—must change its rhetoric towards peace,  must also show by its actions that its is truly going for peace, must leave the territories of Armenia where it has penetrated, and refrain from all kinds of pressure.

"No one says there is no need for peace. But there must be conditions for that peace, peace must not be begged for, peace must be imposed, or at least in today's conditions, that peace must be fully defended," Ohanyan said.

He noted that the trilateral document of November 9, 2020 was basically imposed on the Armenian authorities, territories were handed over to Azerbaijan from Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), and after that the Turkish-Azerbaijani tandem appeared on the borders of Armenia.
