Prime Minister of Sweden Stefan Leuven has resigned, RIA Novosti reports, citing Agence France Presse.

Last week, the presses reported that Minister of Finance of Sweden Magdalena Anderson has been elected chairperson of the ruling Swedish Social Democratic Party and may go on to become the first woman Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Sweden.

Leuven assumed leadership of the Swedish Social Democratic Party in 2012 and won two elections in 2014 and 2018. However, recently, the political party’s positions weakened, and this was expressed based on the results of surveys of citizens.

Anderson assumed the office of Minister of Finance in 2014, becoming the first female Minister of Finance in the Swedish government.
