The first training exercises of the 2022 academic year took place in the commando unit of the Azerbaijani ground forces, Azerbaijani media reported, citing the press service of the country’s defense ministry.
"The commandos surrounded and neutralized the provocative-sabotage group of the imaginary enemy and took measures within the norms and principles of international humanitarian law regarding persons detained during the fulfillment of tasks," the respective statement said, in particular.
The fact that Azerbaijan is trying to teach its military to follow the norms and principles of international humanitarian law is commendable, although not very credible. Both the April 2016 war and the 44-day war last year have showed how the Azerbaijani military understands the norms of international humanitarian law: defilement of the bodies of Armenian casualties, beheading and torture of the still-alive, and degrading treatment of Armenian prisoners of war.
