The Islamic State terrorist group has launched an airstrike in Diyala province in the east of the country, the press service of the Iraqi security forces said in a statement released on Saturday.

The report noted that nine IS terrorists were killed in the strike. All of them were said to be involved in the recent attack on the Iraqi military.

The SHAFAQ News reported about an attack by an IS group on an army facility west of al-Azeem district in Diyala province. The victims of the attack were 11 Iraqi soldiers.

IS militants occupied about a third of Iraqi territory in the summer of 2014. In June, they captured Mosul, the country's second largest city, and declared it the capital of the so-called caliphate.
