The government of Great Britain will represent on Monday new sanctions against Russia, which may affect assets of Russian energy companies, The Times reported referring to sources in the British Cabinet.
According to the newspaper, this involves an asset freeze and a ban on entry into the United Kingdom for individuals and entities of "strategic importance" to the Russian authorities. The new measures may also affect British investments of Russian businessmen and companies associated with the Kremlin, Euronews reported.
The sanctions package will be announced before Prime Minister Boris Johnson's planned trip to Eastern Europe and a meeting with Vladimir Putin.
On Sunday, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, in an interview with Sky News, said that the country's authorities would amend the current legislation in order to be able to expand the sanctions list. According to her, at present, London can only impose sanctions against those who are directly involved in destabilization activities in Ukraine. Amendments to the legislation will expand the list so that any company of interest to the Kremlin and the Russian regime could be subject to sanctions.
At the same time, Liz Truss refused to disclose any details about the announced restrictions. When asked about possible measures against the property of large Russian businessmen residing in London, the UK Foreign Secretary noted that nothing has been ruled out.
The West is concerned about the concentration of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border and, citing intelligence data, claims that Russia is planning to attack Ukraine. The Kremlin denies this information.
