Israeli police have uncovered evidence pointing to the unauthorized use of spyware by its own investigators to tap the phones of Israeli citizens, AP reports.

The announcement comes two weeks after an Israeli newspaper reported on a number of cases in which police used NSO's Pegasus software to spy on a judge's warrant. The article sparked outrage in Israel and prompted the attorney general and lawmakers to launch an investigation.

Police said last month that a preliminary internal investigation found no evidence of alleged misuse of spyware. But on Tuesday, police said a secondary review found additional evidence that changes some aspects of the state of affairs.

Israel's Attorney General has instructed the police to immediately take action to prevent breach of authority and instructed his fact-finding team to submit a report on allegations of illegal surveillance of civilians by July 1.
