In the Iranian city of Ahvaz, a man beheaded his 17-year-old wife in a crowded square and later walked the streets with her head, Iran International reported.
According to the publication, the girl was brought from Turkey, where she went to escape from her husband. Her own father, who is also the uncle of the man who killed her, helped bring her back to Iran. His brother helped the man to behead the girl in the square. Both were detained on the same day a few hours later.
The man said he killed his wife because of family problems, but did not specify which ones. Three years ago, at the age of 14, she gave birth to a child. Activists and human rights activists believe that this is a typical honor killing, which is practiced in Iran for bringing shame to the family.
According to a women's rights NGO in Ahvaz, about 60 women have been victims of honor killings in the past two years, including those aged 10-15. None of the perpetrators was prosecuted, as most of the families did not even sue.
