The Israeli defense forces have revealed their military data factory and artificial intelligence (AI) strategy, JPost writes.

Brigadier General Aviad Dagan, Director of The Digital Transformation Administration, said while the military has been using AI, including during the Gaza War in May 2021, a new strategy for AI was approved by the IDF Chief of Staff just a few weeks ago.

If the main recent achievement of the Defense Army has been the creation of cloud-based digital networks between all forces - from headquarters to forward command centers and troops in the field, then the military is beginning a new digital advance beyond the cloud, Dagan noted.

While there will still be a cloud-based communication network between HQ and frontline units, the military will now be enhanced with edge data architecture that will provide edge local heading for speed and cloud heading for completeness. This means the military will create mini-clouds or networks for each of their units, and sometimes for smaller units, so that they can process and receive data faster than the existing network.

Dagan gave an example of how a wide range of data points can combine sensor detection of an enemy, evaluate who the enemy is, test different response options within range, analyze how much fuel different drones or other units have left - and then quickly send the most ideal order to targeting.

The new AI capabilities will be huge in any potential future war with Hezbollah in Lebanon, where the IDF has already developed a list of thousands of targets, he said.
