The German government plans to ease coronavirus restrictions amid falling cases of coronavirus.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the heads of the federal states are due to meet on Wednesday to discuss possible easing of restrictions.

Possible steps include lifting the requirement for shoppers at non-essential stores to show proof of vaccination or a negative test result, Reuters reports.

The project also includes plans to increase the number of people allowed to participate in private indoor gatherings to 20 if they are all vaccinated.

According to the project, in the second phase of easing, nightclubs will be able to reopen, and unvaccinated Germans will be allowed to visit restaurants from March 4.

The requirement to wear masks indoors and on public transport remains in place.

A German expert panel said the government needs to make plans to ease restrictions given the current wave of infections is expected to flatten in the coming weeks, but warned against easing restrictions too quickly.
