Canada will provide Ukraine with a $500 million loan and $7.8 million worth of lethal weapons, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, CTV reported.

He said the loan is in addition to the previously announced $120 million loan and non-lethal weapons that Canada has already provided to Ukraine.

Trudeau said he spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over the weekend to reiterate Canada's support.

The prime minister said the lethal weapons and ammunition were in response to a specific request from Ukraine, which has already received weapons from the US, the UK, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Poland.

“We’re not seeking confrontation with Russia, but the situation is intensifying rapidly and we are showing our resolve,” Trudeau said. “It’s important for Canadians and the world to know that Canada will continue supporting Ukraine and its independence, integrity and sovereignty, including its right to defend itself.”
