German authorities have announced plans to lift most coronavirus restrictions by 20 March, AP reported.

The decision coincided with the actions of neighboring Austria and Switzerland.

The three-phase plan was approved by Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the governors of the 16 federal states as official data show that COVID-19 infection rates in Germany are beginning to decline.

The easing should begin with the elimination of rules prohibiting people without proof of vaccination or recovery from visiting secondary stores and the lifting of restrictions on private gatherings.

Beginning 4 March, requirements for entry into restaurants and bars will be relaxed; a negative test will be sufficient. Nightclubs will be allowed to reopen, although with entry restrictions.

And “all far-reaching protective measures" are to be dropped on March 20 “if the situation in hospitals allows,” according to Wednesday's decision. An obligation to allow people to work from home will be dropped as well. But Scholz said that mask-wearing and distancing requirements will remain in place.
