The inauguration of Armenia’s President-elect Vahagn Khachaturyan will take place on March 13, Armenian News-NEWS.am has learned from the website of the National Assembly (NA).

The respective NA statement notes that the parliament on Thursday elected Khachaturyan as the new President of Armenia.

According to the Constitution and the NA Rules of Procedure, the President of Armenia shall assume this office at a special NA sitting, which will be convened on March 13—the tenth day after the election of the President.

Earlier, Armenian News-NEWS.am reported that on January 23, Armen Sarkissian had announced his resignation from the post of President of Armenia. The ruling majority “Civil Contract” Faction of the NA had nominated Vahagn Khachaturyan—the serving Minister of High-Tech Industry of Armenia and the former mayor of the capital Yerevan—for the post of new President. The two parliamentary opposition factions, however, did not participate in the NA debates and subsequent voting on the matter of electing the new President. But only the 71 MPs of the ruling faction voted for Khachaturyan’s candidacy Thursday.
