Katalin Novak has been elected first female president in Hungary.

The Hungarian Parliament for the first time elected 44-year-old Katalin Novak as President of the Republic for a five-year term, EFE reports.

Novak, the former Minister for Family Affairs, who will take office on May 10, received 137 votes, while the opposition candidate, economist Peter Rona, has 51 votes.

In her first speech as president-elect, Novak vowed to be a good head of state who defends the family as the foundation of sovereignty, while calling Russian invasion of Ukraine unacceptable.
