In response to the agreement between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait on the joint Durra gas field, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said that Iran retains the right to exploit the joint Durra gas field, Mehr reported.

Durra gas field is a joint gas field of Iran, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and part of the field is located in undefined water areas between Kuwait and Iran, Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Saturday.

According to international rules and regulations, any operation and development of a gas field should be carried out with the cooperation and interaction of all three countries, he said.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman added that the recent document concluded between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia is contrary to existing agreements and previous negotiations, and that such an action is illegal and does not have any impact on the legal status of the gas field.

With due observance of this issue, the bilateral pact will not be approved by the Islamic Republic of Iran, Khatibzade stressed.

The Islamic Republic of Iran reserves the right to exploit the Durra gas field, he reiterated.

Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are trying to pave the way for the development of the al-Durra gas field in the Divided No Man's Land (PNZ), where Iran complains that the field comes into its waters, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry added.
