The next session of the municipal council of Goris, Armenia, will be convened on April 5.

Armenian News-NEWS.am has learned from the official page of the Goris city hall that the aforesaid will be conducted by incumbent mayor Arush Arushanyan, who has been released from custody.

As reported earlier, the court of general jurisdiction of Syunik Province on Monday announced its verdict in the criminal cases against Arushanyan.

Accordingly, the court acquitted Arushanyan of electoral fraud charge. With the other charge, however, he was found guilty and sentenced to 1 year and 6 months of imprisonment. But in consideration of the fact that Arushanyan was in custody for 8 months already, the court imposed a final sentence of 6 months of imprisonment which, however, was not conditionally applied, and he was released immediately from the courtroom.

Instead, the court imposed a probation period of 1.5 years for Arushanyan. But at the same time, he was imposed a fine, as well as a restriction on holding a top local government positions for 5 years.

Arush Arushanyan had been remanded in custody, and he was charged with committing electoral fraud in favor of the opposition "Armenia" Bloc—led by second President Robert Kocharyan—during the snap parliamentary elections on June 20, 2021. But Arushanyan did not accept the charge brought against him, and his attorneys considered the respective criminal cases as political persecution against their client.
