After November 9, 2020, the Armenian opposition should have worked on presenting a new agenda, but the forces did not see its importance and did not take on the mission of coming up with a new pan-Armenian agenda. Former MP, analyst Vahe Hovhannisyan said this during a discussion held Wednesday.

He noted that the Armenians’ victory in the first Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) war in the early 1990s was an important unifying factor, whereas the defeat in the 44-day war in the fall of 2020 dealt a serious blow to the Armenian identity.

"It turned out that it is very difficult to unite around defeat. For that, Armenia had to present a new agenda; [but] nothing was done in that regard—including by the opposition," Hovhannisyan added.

According to him, the main idea should be the formation of an Armenian-centered agenda.

"The authorities should do it, but they do not and will not do [it]. As a result, the opposition should do it, but it does not have a consolidating resource. Maybe the [Armenian] church can take on such a function, but its [respective] tools are not enough," said the analyst.

According to him, the Ukrainian crisis has created serious preconditions for the division of the Armenian world, as the Armenian communities in various countries are under the influence of different and opposing propaganda in this regard. Hovhannisyan stressed that mutual sanctions between Russia and the West will lead to a decrease in ties between the Armenian communities, and this will also lead to a split among them.

"For 30 years we failed to form a citizen of an independent country, we failed to form national and state elites who would be above the authorities, clan and personal interests. Our elites have either 'made money' or lived in another reality," Vahe Hovhannisyan concluded.
