Bulgaria has received a notification from Gazprom to pay for gas in rubles, but will continue to pay in euros, said Minister of Energy of the country Alexander Nikolov, Kommersant reports.

He noted that Bulgaria fulfills all the current terms of the agreement with Gazprom, which expires at the end of 2022. The minister clarified that if Gazprom stops gas supplies to the country, the government will switch to alternative fuel sources. He also added that the construction of a gas interconnector with Greece will be completed by July 1, which will allow Bulgaria to receive gas from Azerbaijan.

Alexander Nikolov said that in the conditions of a military conflict the implementation of the contract may be called into question.

On March 31, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the transfer of gas payments into rubles for 48 unfriendly countries. Fuel companies will transfer payment for gas in euros to a special account of Gazprombank, which will then convert the currency into rubles on the Moscow Exchange.
