The US administration on Thursday took steps to curb the export of American products to three Russian airlines, AP reported.

The move will prevent Russian airlines Aeroflot, Utair and Azur Air from receiving goods from the US, including maintenance parts for their aircraft, the US Department of Commerce said.

These restrictions are significant because it's obviously difficult to keep flying if you can't maintain your aircraft, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Enforcement Matthew Axelrod told reporters.

The effect, he said, is that sanctioned airlines and their fleets will, over time, be largely unable to continue flying, both internationally and domestically, as they are now cut off from international support and U.S. parts and related services they need to maintain and maintain their park.

These measures, known as temporary bans, allow the Department of Commerce to make exceptions if aviation safety is at risk. The rulings are valid for 180 days, but they can be extended.
