Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission (EC), called on European Union countries to supply weapons to Ukraine as soon as possible.

"Ukraine needs to get what it needs to defend itself and what it can handle," von der Leyen said, adding "I don't differentiate between heavy and light weapons," the EC head said in an interview with Bild am.

At the same time, she noted that every effort must be made to resolve the situation in Ukraine as quickly as possible.

She added that everything possible needs to be done to help end the Ukraine conflict, although the hostilities could "last for months or even years in the worst case."
