Japan's Emperor Naruhito planted rice seeds at his Tokyo residence on Tuesday, NHK reported.
The tradition of planting rice on the territory of the residence of Japanese monarchs was started by Emperor Hirohito, who is Naruhito's grandfather. Thus, Hirohito decided to popularize farming among his subjects.
By autumn, the seeds will turn into rice ears, which will then be used during the Shinto harvest festival.
