Emmanuel Macron is ahead in Sunday’s presidential runoff in France. According to preliminary data, the incumbent president has received 58.2 percent of the votes.

His opponent, Marine Le Pen, the leader of the right-wing National Rally party, garnered 41.8 percent of the ballots. This is the highest result for the extreme right forces of France, according to RFI.

Public opinion polls had pointed to Macron's victory until the last minute, but there was a danger that Le Pen would come to power.

The presidential runoff, however, was marked by a low voter turnout.
