US President Joe Biden has nominated Bridget Brink to be the new US ambassador to Ukraine, the White House said.

Brink, who is currently the US Ambassador to Slovakia, is a career diplomat with 25 years of experience, having worked in Uzbekistan and Georgia, as well as in several senior positions at the State Department and the White House National Security Council.

Brink, a Michigan native, is fluent in Russian, and"her years of experience make her uniquely suited to this moment in Ukraine's history, the State Department said in a statement.

The position has been vacant since former President Donald Trump abruptly recalled then-U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch in May 2019. Brink's nomination must be confirmed by the US Senate.
