European Parliament (EP) calls on the countries of the European Union to impose an embargo on energy supplies from Russia, EP head Roberta Metsola said on Wednesday.

"The European Parliament calls for an immediate pan-European embargo on Kremlin-controlled energy supplies. It’s time to cut our dependencies on autocrats once and for all," she wrote on Twitter.

The EP leader promised to support Bulgaria and Poland in connection with Gazprom decision to stop gas deliveries to these countries, which refused to pay in rubles.

On 26 April, Gazprom sent a notice to importer companies in Poland and Bulgaria to stop supplying gas from 27 April because they refused to make final payments in Russian rubles. On 23 March, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed to switch payments for Russian gas exports to unfriendly countries into rubles. He said that Russia would refuse to accept payments under such contracts in compromised currencies, including dollars and euros.
