The German government supports the European Union (EU) plans to ban oil imports from Russia, the German dpa news agency reported.

During the recent preliminary talks on the sixth package of sanctions against Russia, Germany made it clear that it was in favor of imposing an embargo.

The imposition of an EU embargo on Russia has become more likely. Only Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, Spain, Italy, and Greece are currently opposed to the measure.

According to diplomats, Slovakia and Hungary oppose the quick imposition of an embargo because of their excessive dependence on Russian oil.

At the same time, southern European countries have serious concerns about rising energy prices for consumers.

The European Commission plans to impose the sixth package of sanctions on Russia in the coming days.
