At a meeting with Deputy Turkish Foreign Minister Sedat Onal, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN, said that the Turkish planned operation in northern Syria could undermine efforts to combat the terrorist organization "Islamic State", the press service of the U.S. mission to the world organization said.

"Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield also expressed U.S. opposition to renewed military operations in northern Syria, which could lead to additional population displacement, risk further destabilizing the fragile situation on the ground, and undermine international coalition efforts to defeat ISIS," the text reads.

The ambassador also highlighted Washington's understanding of Turkey's legitimate security interests, noting the importance of addressing them through dialogue and diplomacy.

In addition, the sides discussed the upcoming round of consultations of the Syrian Constitutional Committee.
