Ambassador Mher Margaryan, Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN, on Thursday addressed a meeting of the UN Security Council—and on the matter of accountability for gross violations of international law, the Permanent Mission of Armenia to the UN informed Armenian News-NEWS.am.
In his address at the meeting, Margaryan reflected on the matter of impunity for crimes committed in the past—and in the context of the prevention of genocides, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.
He noted that Armenia has repeatedly alerted the international community about the anti-Armenian hate speech and racist rhetoric in Azerbaijan, which is also documented by international organizations.
Touching upon the military aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan against Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) in the fall of 2020 and its humanitarian consequences, Ambassador Margaryan noted that Azerbaijan, in violation of its obligations under international humanitarian law, continues to hold Armenian prisoners of war and civilians captive.
He reflected also on Azerbaijan's obligations to preserve the Armenian cultural and religious heritage and eliminate Armenian hatred.
The Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN noted that “as the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, the International Court of Justice has a central role in ensuring justice and accountability and upholding the faith in international law.”
