Washington is satisfied with the Karabakh conflict, Rashid Nurgaliyev, deputy secretary of the Security Council of Russia, said in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

"This conflict has been brewing for a long time, since Soviet times. And it suited Washington very well, as a pretext for creating tension. The West was not going to resolve problems in this region. It was interested in simmering conflicts that flared up from time to time, damaging the stable life of neighboring states.

No one but Russia undertook to resolve this problem peacefully. With mediation from Moscow, Azerbaijan and Armenia have agreed to a complete ceasefire and to an exchange of prisoners and dead bodies. Moreover, Russian peacekeepers were deployed along the line of contact. Thus, Moscow strengthened its peacekeeping presence in the South Caucasus after a successful ceasefire mediation between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Today Russia is making active efforts to create conditions for the conclusion of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan," he said.
