The European Parliament will not remain silent on the latest violations of fundamental freedoms in Turkey, no matter what geopolitical role the country plays, said Nacho Sánchez Amor, MEP Turkey Rapporteur.

Turkey has problems with democracy, but the Turkish government is to blame, not Turkish society, Amor said during a plenary debate on the report on Turkey.

Turkey is not Erdogan, and Erdogan is not Turkey, he said.

The European Parliament is to vote on Amor's latest report on Turkey.

The EU remains a club of advanced democracies and the report is based on the current disastrous state of democratic standards in Turkey, Amor said. More seriously, it’s not just about her poor condition, but also about the tendency to worsen, he said.

According to Amor, Turks are witnessing their democratic hopes spiral down the drain in an authoritarian spiral that seems to have no end.

Authoritarian character is state policy, fully thought out, programmed, and carried out with terrifying coldness by the ruling elite. The repression against an increasingly helpless society, supported by the media, proves the pathology of nationalism, which puts the rights of the nation far above the happiness of its citizens.

In a few months, it is likely that the third party in the country, the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party, which has received nearly 6 million votes and almost 100 mayoral posts, will be considered illegal, Amor said.

All this is just to get through the elections with fewer obstacles, he said.
